How Many Pixels Do You Need for an A4 Print?

Pixel counts look technical until you match them to the paper. A4 is a fixed sheet. The only question is how many pixels you put on it.

The short answer

For photo-quality A4 printing you want at least 2480 × 3508 pixels (300 dpi) — about 8.7 megapixels.

That is the conventional size for a sharp A4 photo. FreeSnaps prints A4 at photo quality and uses 300 dpi as the target when we prepare your upload. We do not reject smaller files; we recommend this size so the print holds detail.

DPI and PPI in one short analogy

DPI (dots per inch) is how tightly ink is laid on the paper. PPI (pixels per inch) is how many pixels from your file sit in each inch. For this cheat sheet they move together: more pixels on the same A4 sheet means a sharper print, the way a higher-resolution phone screenshot looks clearer than a tiny icon stretched to full screen.

72 dpi is what a website preview uses. It is not a print target. 150 dpi is acceptable if the print hangs where nobody stands close. 300 dpi is the photo-lab default and the one we recommend for A4.

A 12 megapixel phone photo already exceeds 2480 × 3508 before any crop. Heavy cropping — punching into one face from a group shot — is what turns a 12 MP file into a soft A4. Check the preview before you pay.

A 5 megapixel original can still make a decent A4 if you use most of the frame. There is little headroom: trim too much and the short side drops toward that 1200 pixel line.

Can I print a low-res photo?

Yes. We will print what you upload. Honesty matters more than a fake quality gate.

If the short side is below about 1200 pixels, expect soft edges at A4. Text, eyelashes and fine patterns go first. A screenshot, a social-media download or a cropped thumbnail often lands in this range.

If the pixel count is tiny — a few hundred pixels on the short side, or effectively no real resolution left after a crop — treat the result as a softer, more painterly print, not a sharp enlargement. Hang it where you view it from a step back, or pick a smaller print size.
